Celebrate Hanukkah @ W. T. Bland Public Library

If you think of Hanukkah as the Jewish version of Christmas then you need to come to the W. T. Bland Public Library’s Celebrate Hanukkah program on Wednesday, December 9 at 4:30pm. You will learn the real reason for this festive Jewish holiday.  Rabbi Geoff Solomon of the Traditional Congregation of Mount Dora will talk about Hanukkah and its customs. You will learn about the menorah, how to play the dreidel and the significance of the food served during Hanukkah.  Best of all, you will get to taste the foods associated with Hanukkah.  The Hanukkah Readers Theater returns this year and you, the audience, are the stars of the show.  All ages are welcome.

Hanukkah (or Chanukkah), the Jewish festival of Rededication, also known at the festival of lights, is an eight day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev.  In 2015,Hanukkah will start at sunset on Sunday, December 6 and ends at nightfall on Monday, December 14th,, 2015.

Hanukkah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas.  It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.

Celebrate Hanukkah will be held at the W. T. Bland Public Library located at 1995 N. Donnelly Street in Mount Dora.  All Library programs are free and open to the public.  For additional information, please email garryl@cityofmountdora.com or call (352) 735-7180 option 5.
